What is it, and where did it come from?
Chemically, Bentonite is a hydrous aluminum silicate. It is a tri-layered platelet called montmorillonite having tremendous absorption and swelling capabilities. In simpler terms, it is a result of volcanic ash that was spewed into the air millions of years ago and then settled in bodies of water. The ash and rock evolved into a soft waxy mineral over a long period of time as it laid on the bottom of the ocean floor. It is believed the ash which fell into salt water bodies was transformed into Sodium Bentonite. When the waters receded and dry land was exposed, it left large deposits of Bentonite ore. It was used for hundreds of years by Native Americans and by early pioneers as a soap, a lubricant for wagon wheels and windmills and as a cabin roof sealant. It was first known to be commercially mined and processed in the 1880’s.
What is it used for?
It’s most common uses today are: soil sealant liner for irrigation or decorative ponds, water storage ponds, wastewater treatment lagoons, golf course ponds and landfills. It’s also used as drilling mud in the oil and gas field, as a bonding agent for animal feed, in slurry wall construction and well hole plugging.
What are its advantages as a liner system?
1. Bentonite is an effective, natural and economical liner system. When mixed with on-site soils, it has a unique ability to naturally bond to water molecules, swell and form an impermeable barrier to water. Under normal conditions, unless damaged, bentonite will hold its seal indefinitely, saving the cost of replacing deteriorated or depleted synthetic liners.
2. Bentonite generally costs less than membrane liners depending on the type of water project. It can be installed with common earth-moving equipment.
3. Bentonite is non-toxic and safe for human, fish and vegetation environments. It also resistant to harmful UV rays of the sun.
4. Where minimum permeability standards are required, amending the existing soils with bentonite in lieu of importing large amounts of off site clay soils can be cost effective.
